Electricity needs a transportation system to reach consumption centers. This transportation is carried out through an extensive network of electrical lines that connect the production centers with the consumption points distributed throughout the territory. The transmission network is a fundamental element of the electrical system and has a double objective: to guarantee that consumers have electricity at all times, and that it reaches the end user with the least possible energy losses. The electricity transmission network in Spain has more than 34,500 km of high voltage lines, to which medium and low voltage distribution lines must be added. The total length exceeds 600,000 km, about 15 times the perimeter of the Earth. The high voltage lines and more than 400 transformer stations belong to the company Red Eléctrica de España. Medium and low voltage lines, on the other hand, are owned by different electrical companies that distribute electricity to the final consumer.
